Background of the study
Kidnapping has emerged as a significant socio-economic issue in Nnewi South Local Government Area, adversely affecting the community's stability and development. The act of kidnapping not only generates fear among residents but also disrupts economic activities and social cohesion (Ike, 2023; Mbanefo, 2024). This study examines the multi-faceted impacts of kidnapping on local businesses, family structures, and community trust. The rapid escalation of such criminal activities is often attributed to underlying socio-economic disparities, weak law enforcement, and a culture of impunity. Victims of kidnapping, whether individuals or their families, suffer not only financial losses but also long-term psychological trauma. Furthermore, the local economy is affected by the diversion of resources towards security and ransom payments, which in turn hampers developmental projects (Ike, 2023). The research explores how these socio-economic consequences reverberate through the community, leading to reduced investor confidence and impaired social services. By integrating quantitative data and qualitative interviews, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play, contributing to the formulation of effective socio-economic interventions (Mbanefo, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Kidnapping in Nnewi South has escalated into a major socio-economic crisis, undermining community trust and economic development. The high incidence of kidnappings has resulted in significant financial losses for families and businesses, coupled with psychological trauma among victims. Despite government interventions, the issue persists due to inadequate law enforcement and the proliferation of criminal networks (Ike, 2023). The resultant diversion of public resources towards security measures and ransom payments has further strained the local economy. There is a clear need for an in-depth analysis of the socio-economic consequences of kidnapping to inform policy and enhance preventative strategies. This study seeks to address these gaps by providing empirical evidence on the impact of kidnapping in Nnewi South (Mbanefo, 2024).
